Construction on the Quaker portion of 34th is expected to begin sometime after the first of the year. It has been a long time in the making, but our street is going to be incredible once all of the traffic cones are gone.

Thank you for supporting 34th Street! Let’s work to make this holiday season and the upcoming year a success for all 34th Street Association members.

34th Street Construction Update

The 34th Street Construction Team of Parkhill, Smith and Cooper gave an excellent presentation of the street construction.  They showed several before and after photos of our “unofficial Main Street of Lubbock.”Kyle Jackson, also gave a report on the construction between
Quaker and Indiana.
Construction on the Intersection at 34th and Quaker is projected to begin in January of 2014.  After the intersection is completed construction will begin to head east toward Indiana, with work beginning on the north side of the street between Quaker and Memphis.  It is projected that Memphis to Indiana will follow about 6 to 7 months after the Quaker intersection is completed.

Volume 1 Issue 10
April 2013

Spring is such a great time get out and spruce up your surroundings. It is so exciting to witness the many changes along 34th. The street, sidewalks and lights are looking incredible. We are so grateful for the many merchants who are painting and cleaning up their store fronts and even putting in new parking lots. Every little thing each one of us can do, will help to increase the overall aesthetic value of this street. With this thought in mind, we asked Tom’s Tree Place to submit some ideas on how we could help make each of our businesses more appealing.

Store Front Appeal
Drawing more customers to the historic shopping area on 34th Street is the focus for all the beautiful improvements. Consider adding another facet to catch the attention of potential customers driving down 34th Street by adding colorful flower pots to your entrance. The benefit of beautiful pots is not only year long color, but the fragrance of petunias in summer and pansies in winter are a bonus. In the larger pots start with a hardy evergreen shrub and change annual color around it.  To secure a pot, place several heavy bricks in the base before adding potting mix and plants.. Adding a water retention product to the potting mix that helps reserve water is also  recommended, therefore cutting back on watering frequency.

Another eye catcher is a fountain. All you need is water and an electrical source.Be creative and colorful to add excitement to your entrance!
Stop by Tom’s Tree Place and drop your business card in the 34th Street merchant’s box during the month of April to receive 10% off on cash and carry items.

Construction Update:

The weather has been cooperating and construction is moving along at a great pace. Lone Start should be moving east of University very soon. The new bases on the light poles have been placed from Indiana to Elgin and they are beautiful!!! We are so grateful to Parkhill, Smith & Cooper and to Lone Star for their continued dedication in helping make this project go as smooth as possible.

Russell Schlegel of Crusty’s Wood Fired Pizza caters events such as fundraisers, private parties, festivals and any other such events. What makes this so fun is thatRussell brings his trailer with his oven and kitchen on it to your parking lot. We saw himin the City Bank parking lot on Friday and enjoyed a great individual size pizza. He will bring his trailer to you, in your parking lot to sell his pizzas. This is a great idea if a business is having a special event or a sale, it could be a great marketing tool. The
food was great, he has his permits and has days available where he could set up at your place of business. It’s quite a novel idea…

WELCOME
Welcome to our newest member Lubbock Rare Coin, owner Gary Oakley

2013

I can’t believe 2013 is already here!!! So much has happened on 34th in 2012 and this new year brings with it the plans and dreams of many more great things. There is just something special about beginnings, they’re full of anticipation and excitement. The street portion of the first mile of construction is nearly completed. Again, thank you so much for your understanding and patience with this project. We do understand how inconvenient and difficult this whole project has been on each of you, yet, your spirit of cooperation and understanding is making this whole process flow so much more smoothly. I can assure you, this spirit of cooperation has not gone unnoticed. I have been blessed to hear the many kind remarks that have been made by the construction and engineering crews regarding the cooperation and kindness of the 34th street merchants, thank you for doing your part so well.

At the rate Lone Star is traveling, construction will be moving east of University very soon, weather permitting. With that being said, I would like to remind you, especially those east of University, of the many advertising and promotional opportunities that are available through the Association.

Advertising Possibilities

REMEMBER:

Call Kyle Jackson with P,S & C if you have any questions regarding construction. Kyle is a great guy who is very interested in the success of this project. He is more than willing to work with us, he has done so many times. If you have concerns please talk with him before construction is in front of your business.

Kyle Jackson Parkhill, Smith & Cooper 806-473-2200

Something Else to Remember… The progress of construction is at the mercy of the weather. Lone Star took a much needed break during Christmas. As they were ready to get going January 3rd the weather was extremely cold causing a delay in their ability to place the markers to move traffic. So many factors in this process depends on the ground temperature being just right, therefore, it might seem like a perfectly good day to work BUT, if the ground temperature is not right, they cannot continue. Again, thank you for your understanding and please call Kyle if you have any questions or concerns regarding this project

Several of our 34th businesses have painted their buildings, paved their parking lot, installed new signage or have made other improvements to their own business. This is huge!!! I cannot begin to express how proud and grateful we are to you for your part in making this project a success. A new street, lights and sidewalks are great, but, it is up to each of the individual businesses to do their part to help insure the overall success of this project. Every improvement is a huge step forward for everyone, thank you!!!

Construction Update:

Engineer Update

Within the next three weeks, the roadway contractor, Lone Star Dirt & Paving, Inc., should complete the paving of the first half-mile section of 34th Street, between Indiana and Elgin. Lone Star’s ability to complete this section depends on no rain falling within the project site during that three week period. After the contractor finishes the roadway paving in the first section, there will still be some sidewalk and lighting work that lags behind. However, all the driveways and the full roadway should be open within this first section. The Contractor will then move to construct the next section between Elgin and University.

The City has authorized their Design Consultant to proceed with the design of 34th Street, from Indiana Avenue to Quaker Avenue. Over the next few weeks, you will likely see the design surveyor and the subsurface utility engineers working within this section between Indiana Avenue and Quaker Avenue. A construction date has not been established for this section, but the City of Lubbock will conduct a public meeting prior to starting construction west of Indiana Avenue. If you have any questions, please contact Mr. Kerry Miller or Mr. Kyle Jackson at 806-473-2200.
